Even with an outcome in the losses column, I'd call my Opening Day a success. It's crazy what a small gesture like homemade cookies will do for a bunch of 16-18 year old boys, and how far it takes you in feeling like part of the team. I think it's safe to say that "Opening Day cookies" will be a tradition we carry on for many seasons to come.
Do you do anything to kick off your seasons? How do you show support for your husband in his career - coaching or not?
In a matter of two seasons, I conditioned the team to expect cookies before every away game. Coach was on the team, but I didn't start dating him until the summer before our senior year, which meant one season as his girlfriend and one season as the second baseman's. To this day, Coach will claim that his cookie was always burnt that first year - even though he knows now that I was never much of a baker.
Despite my Betty Crocker shortcomings, I made cookies for the entire team and coaching staff to celebrate Opening Day and ring in this season with some sugar...along with a special note of encouragement and support for my one and only.
